Starbox Tutorial
Feb 11th, 2010 by Craftylocks
starbox14 Start with a square piece of paper. Make four folds across the paper.
starbox2 Bring the top and bottom corners together and tuck in the other two sides.
starbox3 With the opening at the top, fold one side along to the central fold.
starbox4 Open up the flap and press it open.
starbox5 Tuck the side of the flap under itself.
starbox6 Now do the same to the other flap on that side, turn it over and repeat on the other side.
starbox8 Fold the four flaps down as far as you can.
starbox11 Pull the flaps open and push the bottom of the star box against a table, using your hand inside the box to make the shape.
starbox12 Wow – beautiful, now it just needs to be filled with treats or a present for someone!

Beading ‘colors of the sea’ with wire
Feb 9th, 2010 by Craftylocks

colors-of-seaFound a cool challenge at crafster.org to create jewelry to the theme ‘Colors of the Sea’. This gave me the motivation to finally use some techniques from a new book.  So I have ventured into working with wire. The technique I tried is hammered wire, it is easy and you just need a small hammer and a steel or marble block. I am lucky to have a special steel block my father in law ‘turned’ himself, but I have been told that an off-cut of marble from a kitchen shop is just as good. The picture shows the same pendant from two different angles.

The fabulous book is ‘Making Colorful Wire & Beaded Jewelry’ by Linda Jones – lotsa pictures, clear instructions and ways to take the basic technique and use it many cool and clever ways.

That’s loud! – Painted Jeans
Feb 3rd, 2010 by Craftylocks

painted-jeansThis was one of those ideas after a few glasses of wine. And having had the idea I could not wait long enough for the shops to open to buy the correct paint – Foolishly I would rather spend 5-6 hours painting with the wrong paint! The paint I needed was textile paint,  the paint I had was normal paint and really old textile medium. It worked fine except it sat on top of the jean forming a skin instead of soaking in like normal textile inks that I bought the next day and used to finish the jeans. Oh well, they are sooo loud that hopefully folk will not notice the difference in texture.

The inspiration for my first pair are Matisse cut outs. I have ideas for many others but not so sure that I would wear them, so I am thinking along the lines of painted hats instead!
